The White Beaked Dolphin is a cold water
species distribution mainly around the North
Atlantic, the white beaked is also a seasonal
visitor to the North east of Scotland. Around late June to July in the Stonehaven area, although
the past two previous seasons 2006 /
2007 there have been very few sightings due
to the global warming.
The white beaked dolphin is a very activate
species curious and bow ride around fast
moving vessels, but lose interest very quickly,
will appear in groups of up to ten animals at a
time around the area of Stonehaven, the calf
are born around Summer time to late Autumn,

The bottlenose dolphin is the most
common of all the dolphins in the British
waters, especially around the West and North
East coast of Scotland, regular visitors to Aberdeen /
Stonehaven area.
The bottlenose to the inquisitive and
appears to be the most friendly of all the cetaceans
(Meaning dolphins, whales and porpoise) will bow ride

Feeding on salmon, herring, sprat, mullet and mackerel.
Most common whale in Scottish waters visits coastal shores unusual appears May
to October as mackerel are on their migration North Atlantic; the Minke Whale is a baleen mammal.
Baleen is a filter system in the mouth of the whale it aids the capture of very
small prey i.e. krill, there plates of bone with hair like features frayed around the
inner edge, there are up to 200/600 plates in their mouth.
The Minke Whale has a black upper body and white under and central body, (flank)
pectoral fin(flippers) may have a white band on the upper side (variable), has a
sickle shaped dorsal fin positioned two thirds of the way down its back tail end,
head large triangular shaped.
Maybe curious around boats especially young juveniles length adult: 7/10m
(23/33ft) new born: 2.4/2.8m (8/9ft), typical sequence dive 5/8 bows at intervals
of less than a minute followed by a long dive, usually lasting 3/15mins, gestation
period of ten months.
Harbour Porpoise so called because this mammal is a coastal animal, and is no
relation or belonging to the dolphin family but is still a cetacean, however is the
smallest of all cetaceans.
This mammal is a shy animal and will avoid boats, the harbour porpoise rarely
breaches, all you will see is the small triangle shaped dorsal fin and part of the
back appearing out of the water.
They appear singly or in small groups of two’s or three animals at anyone time
usually, unless for mating or coordinating together for haunting food (feed), very
little is know about this animal.
Length 1.4 / 1.8 meters (3/5ft) head is triangular shape head upper body dark
grey, lower or under body has a white to cream, newborn calf length 67-85cm
(26-34ins), the gestation period is 10 months, diet sprat herring, whiting and sand
eel.
